Sapporo, Japan 2009
Art Fest of Clay and Fire
A delegation of potters will attend a reception for their work at the Hokkaido Pottery Society of Sapporo exhibition in Japan, September 12-27, 2009. Last year OPA hosted 15 members of the Hokkaido Pottery Society in an exhibition of their work at our annual Ceramics Showcase here in Portland. In return, OPA has been invited to show 30 ceramic pieces at the Hokkaido Pottery Society’s exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, in Sapporo, Japan - Portland's Sister City.
The pottery and sculpture created by members of OPA was selected by a non-member jury and serves to represent not only our organization but our state and country in an international cultural exchange. This event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Portland-Sapporo Sister City Association. OPA will be officially included as part of the anniversary celebrations. An event is also being planned at the Japanese Garden in Portland for early in 2010.
Our goal is an international exchange that will validate and promote further understanding of traditional and contemporary styles of pottery. By sharing and receiving information with Japanese potters we will be at the forefront of cross-cultural communication.
The Oregon Potters Association is honored to be included in this exhibition made possible by the Hokkaido Pottery Society and support from the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
