Intercultural Exchange Program

At the heart of the OPAs international cultural exchange programs lies a profound conviction in the transformative power of clay and ceramics. Ceramics, in all its versatility, serves as a universal language, reaching across geographical borders, cultural disparities, and language barriers. Its unique capability to forge connections and foster understanding is unparalleled, making it a powerful agent of change.

Our exchanges with ceramic artists from the diverse landscapes of Mashiko and Hokkaido, Japan and Mexico City and Oaxaca, Mexico embody this belief. These programs transcend the mere exchange of pottery skills or techniques; they foster a dialogue between cultures, a sharing of differing perspectives, and a celebration of diversity in the world of ceramic art. Additionally, these programs play a pivotal role in preserving and propagating the rich cultural traditions associated with clay art, thereby keeping these cultural art forms alive.

In March and April, 2025, ceramic artists Honorio Cruz, Inez Lara, Rufina Ruiz, and Felipe Martinez worked with with Oregon Potters Association members and Latino communities in Portland, Corvallis, and Eugene. They created work in local studios, fired in kilns and three different locations. They led hands-on workshops teaching their techniques and perspectives at Mt. Hood Community College, and with high school students at Arte Latino in Eugene. Presentations of their work and cultural connections were well-attended at Clackamas Community College and Linn-Benton Community College. The four artists’ work was displayed in the Intercultural Booth at OPA’s Showcase, reaching about 10,000 community members. Community College workshops served 45 adults. Arte Latino high school classes in Eugene served 337 students; the community class, age range 6-60 years old, reached 22 students.
