Artist Statement
Relating to the Earth Through Art...SAVI Clayworks is the culmination of my decades-long love affair with clay, the "stuff of life, the living, breathing substance of Mother Earth." It is a celebration of the miracle of clay, the power of fire, and the birth of beauty that occurs when the two meet, something that is totally engaging and astounding to this day.

Realizing that through this humble substance, coupled with the work of my hands and heart, I can reach not only those who see my work, but also countless generations who may happen upon it in the future, can almost take my breath away when I think of it. To know that my fingerprints and manipulation of the clay has the potential to last for millennia is at once awe inspiring and humbling. It is my honor and privilege to work with clay, the miraculous, God-given resource that enriches my life, and hopefully, the lives of my patrons.
Biography
I've been working with clay since my college days in the early 1980s, when I was at Pensacola Junior College in Florida. Later in the 80s, I finished my Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts Studio at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and graduated in 1987. I continued my college education in graduate school majoring in Education, and began teaching public high school. I have been teaching all sorts of Visual Arts since 1990, mostly at the high school level. Teaching Ceramics/Pottery has been my favorite of the courses I have taught. I have been a member of the OPA for several years, and have shown my work at Ceramics Showcase, the Arts of Clark County Open Studios Tour, Crafts Unlimited Holiday Boutique, and at several Finnish/Scandinavian/Nordic cultural fairs throughout the west coast. My studio is in Vancouver, WA.
