Artist Statement
Ceramics is a part of my creative life and is a direct connection with earth, fire, air, and water elements. My many years as a painter a return to ceramics has brought much joy and creative challenges. And like my beloved mother, who worked with clay and fused glass into her 90s, I find it therapeutic and exciting and meditative, and hope to follow her graceful aging with this creative path. My pieces are fun-ctional and playful, and are made with love to bless our living spaces and lives.
Biography
My work with clay began in the 1960s at LA City College and UCLA; then in the 1970s I worked with cone 10 porcelain making buttons and cabinet knobs in gas reduction kilns. Painting became my primary artform after many years working as a graphic designer. In the 1990s I made a series of paintings on bisque fired clay slabs. Three years ago I returned to clay and using my mother's electric kiln to fire sculptural, narrative mask pieces, along with Arabesque octagonal plates, and most currently enjoying making functional and beautiful tulipieres. My love of color, pattern, and texture comes through and into my ceramic work. My influences are my Lebanese ancestry and my travels to Lebanon, Mexico, Bali, and Europe over the years.
