Artist Statement
Dwayne Sackey - Artist’s Statement - March 2020

Summers in the wilderness inform my aesthetic with awe-inspiring beauty from gem-colored lakes and snow-capped mountain peaks. Channelling nature’s essence into functional pots and abstract sculptures, I relay nature’s gift - a sense of belonging - yours for the asking.

Translating the harmonies of nature’s flaws, mysteries, and intricacies connect you with your sacred place in nature. Gentle curves reflective of streams meandering through flower-studded meadows. Textured surfaces of hard, lichen-covered granite boulders heated by the sun, weathered by the rains. Skyscapes of mountain peaks and ridges, dramatized with intentional, decisive lines. Emotions from wilderness become vistas of the sublime in your home and heart.

Access to the qualities of these raw environments fills your everyday life with comfort and coziness. Like a spring surfacing from the side of a mountain where water is so desperately needed, I create what people might not even know they long for - nourishing, refreshing and whole companions.

Transporting messages from nature into your home, your piece gifts you with the belonging and recognition nature bestows upon those who venture into its embrace. Imbued with this intention, the calm, balanced and bold beauty of nature is literally at your fingertips.
Biography
Dwayne Nii-Teiko Sackey, a ceramicist in Portland, Oregon, draws inspiration from a backpacking camp job where he teaches youth to enjoy the wilderness. He translates nature’s expressive and fluid qualities into art – functional pots and abstract sculptures.

Sackey earned his BFA from Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2019. Merit-based scholarships supported him: the Gregori Jakovina & Larry McDonald Scholarship, the Ellice T. Johnston Scholarship, and the OCAC Community College Scholarship. In 2019 Sackey showed at the Multnomah County Justice Center.
