Artist Statement
I am exploring what ceramics is, which parallel to my internal quest. To me, creating ceramic works is to express my thoughts, ideas and feelings – to embody abstract concepts. However, why I chose clay as a media to achieve that purpose? Even though the form as a sculpture is completed without firing, ceramic works are completed by firing which changes clay to ceramics. I control clay to form objects, but I have to leave the final process to fire – fortuity - in order to create my works. Although I try to create my works calculating such fortuity in order to change fortuity to certainty, I alternate between hope and despair with outcomes. To me, such combination of controllability and fortuity is one of the appeals of ceramics.
Biography
