Artist Statement
My ceramics I produce are born out of the fire, glazed with fly ash from the wood fire that fuels the kiln, sending the pots on a journey through the flames. I like to focus on the technical aspects of tea ware for ritual and ceremonial use, while also balancing that energy by exploring the sculptural aspects of clay as well. I like to see the natural surroundings of the forest and environment reflected in my work, and I enjoy the colors of nature painting my wares.
Biography
Clay has been a core part of my life ever since I was a young girl. My grandmother introduced me to clay when I was quite young, and I continued making ceramics throughout all grade school. I went to college at Cal Poly Humboldt in Northern California, where I was able to dive deep into clay and started wood firing. I quickly fell in love with wood firing as it was the surface design I was searching for. I moved to Portland, Oregon after college and began teaching ceramics and working with clay more. I found wood kiln communities that feel like home to me, and I continue to love firing with them and working on firing techniques. I love big flames, high reduction, and hot and glossy pots. Nothing fuels my motivation more than the fire blazing through the pots in the wood kilns.
