Artist Statement
Creating art can relax and sooth us or it may enliven and stimulate. My goal is to provide time for reflection, artistic growth, and a way to engage fully. My art is how I document my life. I respond to impulses, like something in a collage, dream or discussion that resonates. My intuitive voice comes from the dance between art and writing. It’s amazing how personal insights come from this combination to stimulate even more experimentation and creativity.
Biography
I've been working in clay for about ten years. I decided to go back to school to become an art teacher after years of painting, drawing and visual journaling. I leapt into clay with ceramics classes at Georgie's and through Sara Swink. I'm especially interested in creating stacking totems as a form of storytelling. Working with clay entices me to smash, smooth, carve and giggle my way into three-dimensional life. It's like waking up to the sweetest dreams: conversations with family, street scenes from travel or a remembered melody.
I've been working in Sara Swink's studio for about five now. I teach as a substitute in ceramics programs for both West Linn-Wilsonville and North Clackamas School Districts, after retiring from my job as a middle school art teacher. I sell my work through studio sales and the Mt. Tabor Art Walk. My goal is to up my game through participation with OPA, CAC and Portland Open Studios.
