Exhibition: From the Earth

From the Earth  is an OPA member exhibit at The World Forestry Center which will show the connection between the potter and the earth.

We as potters have a unique relationship to nature; the clay is dug from the ground, molded and reformed in our hands. Every surface treatment used was formed naturally and organically in nature.  We collect elements, calculate and measure each one individually. Our firing methods come from nature: the gas in the kiln, the wood fire, the salt, the soda… at every step we have gathered something natural, every combination creating a unique outcome. Even if we never leave our studios, we are still immersed in nature.

At the same time we find that art often mimics nature.  We may press a sea-shell into our work, or find that our plate looks a shell.  Our shapes and surfaces might remind us of mossy bark, a geode, the ocean.  We may be inspired to recreate a geode, a seed pod or a flower… nature is such inspiration!

The World Forestry Center seeks artwork that demonstrates a distinct connection with nature, by using natural firing methods, surface treatment that represents or mimics natural landscapes, or otherwise displays and tells the story of potter and their relationship with the earth.
